-377 Peace on Earth is achievable, amirite?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Only way peace on earth would happen was if every single person with an opposing view to another group of people were wiped out.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

If by "wipe out" you mean kill, then that's ridiculous. People didn't have to kill all slave owners to free the slaves, and women didn't have to kill all men to vote. Society is getting better in terms of discrimination and violence.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Yes, American society is. But we're talking about **world** peace. All those corrupt countries? Yeah, there's no way this is gonna happen.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

There's no way it's going to happen easily, or during our lifetimes. That doesn't mean it's not going to happen. I'm sure there were many corrupt governments in Europe a thousand years ago. Chances are those governments will eventually become less corrupt as the current leaders die or retire, or if they become even more corrupt the other countries will step in. We might have to fight a few wars or help a few rebellions to achieve world peace, but I believe that eventually we will be able to stop fighting each other. I think the biggest obstacle to world peace is the possibility of the world ending before we can achieve it.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Different opinions and all that is the kind of stuff that makes the world go round. And those always lead to fights. If we don't have different opinions then society will go no where and the world will stop going round and we die (figuratively speaking)

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I don't see why racism, discrimination, and things like that are what makes the world go round, or how society will stop working without them.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I meant that different opinions lead to fights. Were always going to have different opinions, because society would go nowhere without them, so there will always be fights (no worldwide peace). If you see racism and discrimination as the only form of problematic opinion differences then that's where we don't see eye to eye...

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Those are basically the only forms of problematic opinion that are worth starting wars over. I guarantee you, nobody has ever started a war in the name of their favourite ice cream flavour. Society doesn't need completely different opinions in order to function. For most things there is a right and wrong answer, but people on the wrong side simply don't care about the other side's arguments. I believe that one day people will be open-minded enough to accept the right answer when they see it, and thus will not fight over anything.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I just can't see 6 billion people cooperating like that

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Actually it's 7 billion.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Their is hardly ever a "wrong or right." People believe different things. For example, AL-quida believes what they are doing is right while everyone else believes that what they are doing is wrong. Hitler believed that what he was doing was right while America believed that he was not right.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

My apologies to the 1 billion people I left out haha

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I think we can all agree that Hitler and Bin Laden were, in fact, wrong. People believe different things, but that doesn't mean they're all right. By the commonly accepted definition, harming people who haven't done anything equally wrong is wrong. Murder, rape and assault are wrong. Lying, cheating, and stealing are wrong. Sexism, racism, homophobia, and religious debates are wrong. The people who believe these things are right can't argue their opinion; they simply don't listen to reason. If you can prove to me that any one of the above is or could reasonably be considered right, then perhaps we need a new definition.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Wars havent been started over their favorite ice cream but they have been started over oil, which is everybodies favorite ice cream. What if somebody stole like Robin Hood, could they not show that what they are doing is right?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I don't see wars over oil lasting forever. (I don't know much about how they started, though) Robin Hood was in the right, but he never would have existed (in the story) if Prince John hadn't been so corrupt. Like I said above, the corrupt dictators of the world won't live forever either. Are you just reading through and replying to all my comments?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Corrupt dictators will live forever. Just as one is being replaced, another will come up. Plenty of times in world history we thought we were stopping corruption but it doesn't take much for another one to rise again. The only way this would work is if the world population was significantly smaller. But this would require a "wipe out", which I think we'd all be against.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

They will not live forever, they will be replaced.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I believe that what bin laden did was wrong. However, according to their religion, they need to fight "a holy war." Most islamic people believe this to be a internal war. The extremist believe this to mean that an external war; they believe that their religion demands they kill the infidels. So in the extremists eyes, they are right and we are wrong.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

There have been many governments in the past that were corrupt by our modern standards but no longer exist. These governments either became more civilized through history or were overthrown.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

You just called them extremists, which simply reinforces the fact that they are wrong. No rational person would think killing innocent people with slightly different religions is right. The very idea of morals and right vs. wrong is based on treating people with respect. I'm sure that eventually people will learn to see reason and extremists will disappear.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Extremist is a label that we have given them. In order for you to understand who I was talking about, I had to use the label. For allyou i carehave we canhave call themme "Thoe holy people of God."Most A different name for them wont change who im talking about or what these people do. My point I was making though was that they believe that what they are doing is right.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

My point was that even though there is improvement, there will always be countries/dictators going to opposite direction. And sure, we can all agree the terrorists are in the wrong, but terrorists won't. All it takes is a couple of terrorists to stop world peace from happening. They think they're right, doesn't matter much what we think

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I personally just don't believe that there will //always// be people who are corrupt or fanatical who start wars or prevent peace. It really just comes down to faith in humanity.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

"Good and bad are human concepts, so something that is not human cannot be classified as neither good nor bad."

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I think it's possible, just incredibly hard.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I'm going to have to disagree with you on that one. There will always be different opinions and there will always be people willing and wanted to argue and fight about what they feel is right. Even if the human race was whipped out the human race started over again world peace woils not happen. This is because some people refuse to be wrong and won't take no for and answer.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

If everyone was deaf, there would be peace right? It'd be hard to accomplish, but eventually we might be able to have everyone deaf and/or mute! But if you wanna talk world peace in that sense, wars won't start over every tiny argument, compromises, resolutions, it eventually will be settled and at one lucky point in time where there are no wars or arguments at one small amount of time. Goal flippin' reached dawg.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

But that could never happen! People are just to different and set on accomplishing something even when other people stand in the way.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Making everyone deaf would not work in the least. We would still communicate, through sign language and writing. If we were all deaf and mute and tied to a wall, maybe we would be peaceful eventually. But also extremely unhappy.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Not that kind of peace, I meant peace like quietness...

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Every time I see "peace on earth", I'm reminded of this song we used to sing in Sunday School. It's stuck in my head now. Thanks. no I don't believe absolute peace is really achievable but I //do// think we can come fairly close. Eventually though, someone would probably come along and mess it up.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Haha what song??

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Hark! The Herald Angels Sing. "Peace on Earth and mercy mild, God and sinner reconciled, hark the herald angels sing, glory to the newborn king." And it's just that part going over and over because it's all I remember.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I used to sing that one too. I think the other part went like "joy for all yee nations wide something something from the skies, some more random stuff Christ is born in Bethlehem"

by Anonymous 11 years ago

GLOOOOOO-OOOOOOOOOOO-OOOOOOOOOOOO-OOOOOOORIAA, IN EXCELSIS DEO MOTHERFUCKERS

by Anonymous 11 years ago

oh goddamnit, wrong song. they all kind of run together after a while.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

yeah, that one has the epic trumpet solo

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Great, first I have that "peace on earth" Christmas carol stuck in my head, and now Ross got a version of Gloria I sung with my chorus stuck in my head. GLORIA IN EXCELSIS DEO ET IN TERRA PAX HOMINIBUS BONAE VOLUNTATIS. LADAMUS TE BENEDICIMUS...

by Anonymous 11 years ago

The Gloria song was always accompanied with tambourines in my church, I loved that song... Did anyone else ever watch Jesus Christ Superstar in Sunday School? Because I did, and now I have the beggar's song stuck in my head.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

When I see something about world peace, it reminds me of a good song called One Day by Matisyahu. :)

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Well depends on what kind of peace. Like everyone not disputing or a U.N ran world kind of thing? Like one nation under all skies, for liberty and justice for all races?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

It would be good if it was, but I don't think it's really possible. That's why ww2 was so bad, because people wanted peace so much that they would turn their backs when they saw the Germans breaking the treaty of versailles. If they had just seen what was happening and done something about it, the war probably wouldn't have even started.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Maybe after all of us are dead

by Anonymous 11 years ago

We said when the world was in peace, not in pieces.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

The world will be in pieces soon enough if the world continues like this.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Unless there was some kind of mass equalizing event that brought all countries and their people to the same quality of existence, then there will always be the bigger powers who want just that little bit more influence in the world. The weaker countries will feel like they don't matter as much and the fighting starts again. As long as there's even a small difference, people will find a way to fight about it.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I can see this being POTD because it's a good discussion.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I kinda doubt it to be honest

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I voted NW before I thought about it. Look at Japan, hundreds of years it ago it was split up and at war with itself. When the threat of an outsider came, the country grouped together to defend itself. This reoccurred with various countries. Much like earth, we're separated and at war with our self, so when something outside comes, we'll band together to fight. (This is how I see it anyways.)

by Anonymous 11 years ago

So we'll have world peace when we get attacked by aliens?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

As in the world will be at peace with itself, yeah. :D

by Anonymous 11 years ago

What about the countries that decide they want to side with the Aliens?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

If you're in a bank and a gunman threatens everyone inside, who in their right mind sides with the gunman?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I think if they thought they could survive by siding with the aliens, a lot of people would.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

If a gunman comes in with a gun demanding all of the money, heck yeah im going to side with the gunman. Dieing over money just wouldn't be worth it.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

But who joins the gunman's side, and helps oppress the people?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

As long as there is change, as long as there is stimuli in our environment, there can never be peace. Peace can only be achieved with robots, seriously.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

We all would like to think so.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

o i wish, my good sir

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Eventually science will bring us to a point where there are no more opinions. Only fact. After that it will only take a few generations for people to just accept that and get along.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Science turns us into robots?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I'm sorry. I don't remember saying that. What I said is there will only be fact. Something everyone on Earth agrees on is that we revolve around the Sun. This is a fact. Eventually everyone will agree that we are all the same species and we really aren't that different. Things like sexual orientation won't be looked down on and neither will any other natural occurrence that makes someone a minority. Hatred is spawned from ignorance. Science is the cure for ignorance.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I disagree. Let's say a country, lets say America, decided there government was better than the governments of Africa and went in to take over. The African governments would fight and America would win. Small rebellions would break out continuously until America got tired of fighting. At which point they will most likely withdraw. This cycle has repeated over the millennium. Please explain (not trying to be rude I'm actually interested) how science would stop this?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Well seeing as Science only really started being factual a few hundred years ago and didn't start booming until less than a century ago the whole millennium thing holds no ground. And I never said this will be soon. Hell. Probably more than 1,000 years from now. But eventually it can and most likely will happen.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

People know that different races are naturally occurring but that doesn't stop racism.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Wars are caused by largely by the division of resources and conflicting view points. As I don't see an end to people complaining about the division of resources or an end to conflicting view points, there will not be peace on earth. Couple this in with the fact that wars are good for employment, and it's inevitable that someone will always be malcontent with another. It's sad, but it's human nature. Greed and jealousy get in the way, and it's on a larger and thus more harmful scale than just if one ordinary person is jealous of another's hair or something. People without power don't blow up people who have nicer hair than they do. People in power can do so, and do so. It's just the way it goes. Not that wars are caused by hair. That was an example.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I suggest you just wait another 20 hours or so if you're gonna be like that, Brett. It *is* a debatable topic.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I didn't say it wasn't.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

How is it human nature to be greedy? If you look at tribes, and "natural humans", you see that they are very kind and caring people, who share within their tribe. If we were to form a community with the whole world, then world peace would be achievable. This is no easy task and is extremely difficult, but if we had to cooperation of everybody, it is very possible.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

These people are the minority, not the majority. In fact it's people such as these who generally get screwed over by governments as happened with the Native Americans. It could be argued that there is also too much prejudice for any generation in the forseeable future to make world peace. While the process of globalisation could be helpful in making the world a community, I just don't see it happening. I didn't say that it was human nature to be greedy, I said that malcontent was human nature; many people are unhappy about something, at some point. Greed and jealousy can get in the way, and they do. Many wars have been caused by greed regarding resources, and that is proven--whether it be America's oil wars, or Italy's invasion of Abyssinia back in 1935 which was driven by the need for resources. Besides which, achieving the cooperation of everybody?? That will never happen! There will always be people who disagree. Any movement toward world peace would be laughed at by everyone in power. Wars have been going on for so long, that people don't know any other way. And, aside from sport it's one of the only things that makes people patriotic. It's not achievable nor sustainable.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

The reason it is not achievable is that the majority doesn't think it is.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

That, and a bunch of other reasons.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

For as long as there are people who vote "no way", world peace is not achievable.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

We don't all have to agree, we just need to respect each other. And try to not steal each other's land.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

World peace is never going to happen and anyone who thinks its even possible option is a lunatic. People need to get their heads out of the sky and see the real world.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I look at it in kind of a "if a tree falls in a forest..." kind of way. Yeah, sure, peace on earth is achievable if talking about the actual planet earth, on which no humans exist. But peace between all individuals isn't plausible. And if no one lives on the planet, then there's no one to recognize the peace, and therefore it doesn't exist anyway.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

If by "peace on earth" you mean no wars, then yes. It is very achievable. But absolute peace is impossible. Right and wrong are human implications, and what may be right in one person's eyes is wrong in another's.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

That's what I thought. If be peace you mean no violence, then yes, world peace is achievable. But there will always be feathers ruffled and opinions shared.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Theoretically, sure. Realistically, definitely not. As long as two people have opposing viewpoints, or someone from one group takes it to the extreme, peace isn't achievable. Plus peace would be so boring. If the Earth was peaceful we'd have nothing to bitch or moan about, or be concerned with. It'd just be blah.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

There cannot be peace on earth while humans are here because it is human nature to fight and disagree with one another.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

We're never all going to agree on something. It's human nature.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

wait guys after reading most of the comments (yeah theres lots of them) this thing always comes back : ''we will always have different opinions''. So what? Is THAT what causes ppl to kill and violate basic human rights and so on? It CAN but it doesnt have to. there are more NWs on this that YYAs but that doesnt mean we're all gonna hate on each other and all the NWs are going to form a big ''lets go kill all the ppl who thought world peace is achievable!''. Little by little, education is making its way and now ppl who live in democracies (relative democracies if you want but please don;t deny that America and most of the countries in Europe are democracies) are learning to find other solutions to disagreements than just guns and soldiers. It takes time but how can you be sure that one day, in a looooooooooooong time, there will be too many educated people compared to the non educated people and that will eventually help prevent war and terrorism altogether. (im not judging ppl who didn't get an education but i do believe this is how you learn to think)

by Anonymous 11 years ago

All I want is peace on Earth. ...and a shotgun.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

It's said to see so many downvotes for this particular post

by Anonymous 11 years ago

>Kills everybody but himself >Makes world peace happen

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Not with people like George Bush.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

The way I see it is that even if, theoretically, everyone was able to see eye to eye and stop disagreeing and starting wars (although I don't think this is possible), there would still be issues with the fact that resources are running out. Eventually, food and water will become more and more scarce, and people will have no choice but to fight each other in order to survive. It's just the way things work and unfortunately it's never going to change.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Well THIS was depressing. Shows what a positive attitude everyone has...or lack thereof

by Anonymous 11 years ago

War, war never changes.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I kinda wonder how the OP thinks world peace is achievable. By non-violent means? If so then lolskis. Wish anon was still here to join the discussion. :/

by Anonymous 11 years ago

No, OP thinks we should achieve world peace by violent means.
