+95 People who argue that teachers and nurses should make more money than actors and athletes are essentially saying that we should determine salaries based on subjective worthiness rather than objective economics, which is foolish, amirite?

In my opinion, athletes should make more money because they can only "work" for so many years before they get old/an injury and have to rely on their earnings for the rest of their lives.

I don't think athletes and actors should be payed less, I just think teachers and other important jobs should be payed more.

Right. You think they should, but not everyone does. If we were to use subjective standards, how would it work? Would we have debates to decide the minimum or average pay for every profession? Who gets to be on the committees that ultimately make the decisions, the government, the school board, the community? What if the value of the currency changes or the economy picks up or goes into another recession? What about people who are simply incompetent at their profession, should they still get the same base pay as someone who is clearly superior? Subjective standards simply would not work. It would create more problems than it solves. That's why salaries must be based on economics, without exception.

That's why I said "I think". That was an opinion, not a fact. And you seem to have an extreme capitalist view (not that there's anything wrong with that). Problems like that aren't as prevalent in a communist society (not that I support communism or anything).

Your post and the one a little under yours. That's great timing right there.

I hate when people get mad over how much athletes and movie stars are paid. They're paid based on their worth to their employer, which has nothing to do with you. If you don't like athletes' salaries, don't buy team merchandise. Don't like how much movie stars are paid? Don't pay to see their movies. That simple.

Teachers are underpaid, but if you're doing it for the money, you should not be teaching.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Yeah, you should be doing it for the Summer breaks.

Everybody works for the money.

Also,it's fucking stupid how people hold teachers up to a higher standard than others. Why do they have to love their job? As long as they do it competently and are able to impart knowledge onto their students, why should we care what their motives are?

Many educators work because they want to teach, not for the salary. Many of the teachers in my high school have a PhD, they're obviously overqualified yet they teach because they like what they do. Everyone should love what they are doing. However, people hold teachers to a higher standard because teachers have to deal with the future of children. It's not like being a plumber where all you have to do is get the job done. Teachers are dealing with kids, who are extremely delicate. A teacher can have a major affect on their students' lives. I feel that a teacher have to have a passion for their job in order to be a good teacher.

I still think competence is much more important than passion. One of the worst teachers I've had were extremely passionate. I loved going to his class but I never learned a thing from him. Maybe giving them more money would make them work harder to keep their job. And a side note about PhDs. If you have a PhD and no work experience the only thing you can do is teach or lecture because you'll be too over qualified to start at many private institutions.

Still, entertainment is just as important for education as work itself. And it's not like morally educational movies don't exist. Teachers are underpaid, but the basis of capitalism is supply and demand, so if poeple are willing to pay so much for an actors skills, then that's how much they get.

How is entertainment important for education? Yes, we need to be engaged in the subject a sufficient amount to learn, but I don't see how movies and sports really make such a big impact on learning trigonometry.

Come back to me when you've spent one entire day studying with no breaks and see how much you absorb.
