+19 Its okay to love animals more than people, amirite?

by Alert_Candidate453 4 weeks ago

I mean EVEN IF it wasn't ok, what can anyone do? Force you to love your family more? You feel how you feel. You can't really help that.

by Public-Refuse 4 weeks ago

I have a feeling we would all be a lot less in love with our pets if they could actually talk. lol, the OP doesn't think animals hold grudges or betray trust has obviously never met my horse.

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

Or my dog Cedar, lmao! She's an old lady so she earned alot of freedoms, one of them being me letting her beg for food and i sharing it. Last night we shared chestnuts, i gave her the last piece and said "no more". Cedar huffed and snorted at me, then knocked stuff off the table. Like, girl, I'm not lying to you

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

There are many many shenanigans but my horse let himself into the hay barn at 2 in the morning, or unhooked the electric fencing and let himself into the mare's pastures, etc. I'd find him in the morning - just proud of himself.

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

Lmao! What a guy!

I have to do the whole showing hands to my 2. The Iggyhuahua has taken to telling me when i need a nap or time for bed.

Horses aren't to be trusted, I assumed op meant animals other than horses.

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

Well, there were plenty of ethologists and primatologists who obviously preferred other animals over humans, and I personally know people who like to spend time with their pets more than with their family members. I guess it's normal if it doesn't hurt anybody, but it might be a problem if it interferes with ones social life. Like it or not, but we live in a society and building human connections often helps us to survive.

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

We live in a society where an individual could quite easily survive without leaving their house for months. Not saying it would be optimum but we definitely don't need social connections with other humans the way we used to. Not for survival. If someone chooses to spend time with an animal instead of people then it's a difference in social life as opposed to an interference. imo.

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

The only reason that person is able to survive without leaving their house for months is thanks to the work of countless other humans keeping society running. They still rely on other people to survive.

by Parking-Assignment 4 weeks ago

I imagine animals are far more fascinating than humans because they are different. There are plenty of unhealthy and dysfunctional families. Those people sound like they have been wounded deeply by human relationships.

by demetris13 4 weeks ago

There's plenty of unhealthy (physically/ mentally) animals and the diversity of humans is enough to provide fascination. So I don't think it's that. Some people enjoy being with a living being that doesn't employ the same social demands as a human does. Neither do they fake their behaviour, have as much complexity, or alterior motives as humans often do.

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

it's absolutely okay to do so! but to me it's a phrase that's sort of a "tell" that the person is fundamentally unhappy. I love my animals and they bring me tremendous joy, but so do my friends! I don't compare them and most people don't. So this sort of phrase tells me more about how you feel about humans than animals.

by Soggy-Extreme3959 4 weeks ago

People have always been mean to me, it only makes sense for me to love the things that show all their care for me

by Alert_Candidate453 4 weeks ago

Animals also aren't smart enough to judge us for many of our human shortcomings. That helps too. Here's an interesting bit: Would we say the same about people with severe learning disabilities?

by Douglasaurore 4 weeks ago

Comparing disabled people to animals is an interesting thing to do

by Simple_Water6892 4 weeks ago

Ignoring the question is also interesting. The point is that if a creature is unable to judge you or express judgement, you interpret that as unconditional love but unconditional love only means something if the other party has a choice in not loving. Pets mostly like whoever feeds them the most.

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

Not necessarily. All people are animals so some comparisons are unavoidable.

by Douglasaurore 4 weeks ago

honestly same. everyone in my life ends up hurting me at some point, so tbh my cat is my best friend at this point

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

You have a very candy colored view of animals, they don't love unconditionally and they do all the things you listed saying they dont and the connection is based on you meeting their needs or being otherwise dependent on you. Which is fine, but its not unconditional love, they just have far less ability to express, push back, or tell you in a way you can understand, but they are just as fallible as people and not at all unable or unwilling to express pain in less than what you might call 'loving' towards you if you are cruel

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

A lot of people believe animals love unconditionally simply because animals aren't able to speak I'm guessing a lot of people would be disappointed to learn how often their dogs are thinking "I'll do whatever you want if you just give me food or pet me" lol.

by Outrageous_Cup 4 weeks ago

Yes, we humans project the things we think we need onto the creatures around us (to make ourselves feel secure and safe), and think because we see them that way, so they must be, and any variance from the expectation is considered unnatural and wrong, rather than the human considering their perception was lacking

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

We then get indignant and punish and lash out at things and try to control things we have no right to interfere with, simply because it didn't meet our faulty perception, because we'd rather protect our belief than consider changing it

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

Or the "No bro, I actually don't like you picking me up randomly out of the blue to show all your friends on zoom"

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

That and some animals definitely hold grudges, some of them being the crows.

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

It reminds me of parents who only are able to have a good relationship with their kids when they are babies/toddlers and in the stage where they unquestioniningly adore their parents, have no independence, real opinions, etc. and as soon as their kid starts to grow up and they are no longer completely in control, they lose interest.

by Substantial-Job-1810 4 weeks ago

Sometimes that can be true, but I feel like people who are there, usually get there from having unrealistic expectations placed on them, and believing they had to be something they weren't in order to be accepted. Then they lie to be accepted and do their best to live up to the lie, and get upset and discouraged when they're unable to live up to it and people notice. People probably get upset and then they feel helpless because they were just trying to be acceptable and didn't realize that lying was thwarting them because its how they earned approval when they needed it to survive

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

Its all kind of a nasty shame driven culture we've built where almost nobody believes their authentic selves are good enough or acceptable

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

People who were traumatized or abused have more of a tendency to enjoy an animals company because they're much simpler to deal with. Easier to trust. No complexities or adherence to social norms. If a person's close relationships growing up treat them like poorly, it's very formative. It's like getting into a plane for the first time and end up surviving a crash. That person is highly likely to not like flying. So they stick with trains. Safer, simpler and more reliable in their mind.

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

Exactly, if you need the validation of an animal you must be a pretty terrible person.

by enidbechtelar 4 weeks ago

Wow you took the words right out of my mouth. Nothing wrong with loving animals but it doesn't make sense to compare a relationship to a pet to a relationship to a person.

by Alainahettinger 4 weeks ago

You are writing this as if love between humans doesn't depend solely on meeting eachother's needs. The difference is.. you show an animal love and it will always reciprocate. Humans, not so much.

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

Animals don't reciprocate love always lmao, I've seen countless cats who live with a lovely family and still they never are reciprocate. Same with some dogs.

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

Animals do not always reciprocate love. Humans often reciprocate love. Some are better at it than others, some have more to reciprocate than others. In the instance of a pet, the animal has virtually no concerns or stressors in its life, is well fed and cared for and therefore has nothing but its best to offer. Humans however are rarely treated as well as a well mannered pet and are considerably more burdened. Try working with an animal and you'll find a workhorse or mule or really any farm animal responds very differently. Animals in the wild won't reciprocate your love at all, and will probably even hurt you if you try to love them, out of fear. You ignore the fact that love is not a magical endless fountain running at its highest capacity from every being, but in fact requires resources in order to flow. Love like kindness is only free to recieve, not free to give. And with people you cannot take endlessly without reciprocating and expect the well to never run dry, just as you couldn't with any other being with needs and limits. This does not mean the being doesn't love you, simply that it is a finite being with needs of its own.

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

You aren't wrong.

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

It's also okay not to create an unhealthy and toxic ranking system of who/what you love the most

by Rosenbaumcordel 4 weeks ago

I know if I have to save either a human or animal life, each time I'm saving the human first

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

Exactly… human is gonna have a longer life, has multifaceted relationships, will go through more milestones, could contribute scientifically, politically, artistically to the world as opposed to a pet which would probably end up living out 95% of its life in a house. Not saying animal lives aren't worthy but there's more at stake with a human life, only argument that could be made is that animals are inherently "innocent" and humans are not…but still that's not valid.

by Alainahettinger 4 weeks ago

If that is what you feel, sure. No living thing on this earth is owed love. No where in the stars is it written that you should love one thing more than the other or at all

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

Ya'll love to brag how much you hate people.

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

It is simply a fact that humans are rather cruel it's fairly easy to grow bitter towards your own species when you've been put down again and again

by hillsrosario 4 weeks ago

by Jackson75 4 weeks ago

That's a huge stretch considering all of human history.

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

I'm convinced that people who hold this opinion are either literal children or have trouble connecting with people because they have little to no social skills.

by Helpful_Simple_5106 4 weeks ago

I think especially with cats it comes from a lot of broken people who feel like they can't depend on anyone, so having a pet that fully depends on them is really "healing"

by Soggy-Extreme3959 4 weeks ago

Opinions like this are why many people prefer the company of animals who don't suffer from logorrhea.

by wbednar 4 weeks ago

more like straight up delusion rather than a lack of social skills

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

They also often eat animals that come from animal agriculture so in a very real sense, they are paying someone to abuse animals for them. Love? Sure…

by Next_Gur 4 weeks ago

Very mentally unhealthy stance

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

It seems like op's stance roots from their experience. Maybe their pets were able to comfort them more than the people around them. They might change this stance if they meet people who love them and don't betray them.

I never trust people that put animal life over human life. People with this opinion are so weird and kinda creepy. Loving an animal that lives for about 10 years and you can't communicate with and would eat your face after a couple days if you die.

You must be surrounded by a ton of horrible people, damn. I love animals too, but your lack of compassion for people is disheartening. For every bad person out there, there is at least one good one, if not more :(

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

To quote from the original "All Creatures Great and Small (1978-1990)" show: "If having a soul means being able to feel love and loyalty and gratitude, then animals are better off than a lot of humans". I agree with this. In the food chain us humans are basically above most animals and that's true. So for that reason most people would want to see animals as "lesser" than humans. When that's unfortunate. Not to mention (and this might piss people off) but I'm pretty sure serial killers are known to torture and kill animals first before they move on to killing humans...because of how meaningless they are to them. So there's that. Not that everyone who doesn't like animals is a serial killer. But just saying Animals are amazing I think it's because they're seen as "lesser" is why we should love them more. Not to mention humans can really suck sometimes (not that animals don't), but humans are way worse in my opinion. And I think we're very arrogant as a species. And I don't think you're mentally ill for caring about animals and possibly loving them more than humans.

by salvatorehyatt 4 weeks ago

It's kinda weird to love another species more than your own, but that just shows how much we suck

by Puzzled_War4976 4 weeks ago

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

i love my cat more than my parents humans suck

by nmayert 4 weeks ago

I don't understand people who say that people with this opinion are mentally unwell or have no social skills. Love isn't linear. Most days I say I love my cat more than anything and I feel like I do, because I live alone with her and my closest family members hours away. But in reality it's not comparable. I love my cat more than life sometimes. But I also love my family and friends more than life sometimes. If someone forced me to choose between my cat and my mom I wouldn't be able to make a choice, because I love them equally. Which, speaking of having to choose between pets and humans, I'd like to argue that anyone who would say they easily would pick any human over an animal are cruel and lack empathy. What makes these people value humans more than animals?

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

I treat my cat way better and am much more concerned with his welfare than my father ever was for me. I think its totally OK.

by Lowekhalil 4 weeks ago

That is absolutely not what survival of the fittest means. Survival of the fittest refers to mutations that make an animal more adaptable to an environment. It's the driving force behind evolution.

by These_Ad 4 weeks ago

y'all going mad over someone loving another species more than humans is the exact reason why some people love animals more than humans. you're literally jealous of a cat because someone loves them more than a random irrelevant human. just because you're human doesn't mean you get to deserve all the love and consideration by another human. that's just unhealthy and problematic.

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

Does this same logic not apply to animals as well lol

by Glum-Teaching 4 weeks ago

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

It's okay to change the oil on cars more than on a kayak. There's not necessarily a competition here. It's fine to love animals but if you take time to grow relationships with the people around you then what you get out of human relationships is completely different. I'd urge to seek love or even just companionship from people because as difficult as it is, people are the only way to really provide that.

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

That's all good but can they bring you food on table?

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

PREACH!!!

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

I dunno.... Ve is basically a prisoner that humans manipulated to stay with humans since they can be relatively tamed instead of being in nature. Its ok to love animals a lot.. just remember that everything around you was built by people that had to be incredibly crafty to the point of progress where you dont have to struggle to stay alive. Also if Ve were turned into a human and just stayed around and did nothing while u feed them and take care of their poop.... ud prolly have a different opinion lol.

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

However it is not okay to love people as a whole more than animals.

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

I don't think anyone is really against this idea. Only in the context of a which would you save from death your cat or the neighbor kid kinda thing is when people tend to take issue.

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

not really and animals love you bc you feed them 😂 try befriending a random tiger and let us know how that goes

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

Honestly this just reminds me of my ex who was absurdly attached to his pet. It's difficult to form a bond with someone that unhealthily clings to their pet. It got to the point where I was joking that he'd rather sleep with the dog than me ... until I realized how much peanut butter he had in his room 😬 But seriously, not to suggest you're that bad, but maybe one of the reasons people aren't fun for you is because you drive them away with your views towards your cat?

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

I totally get where you're coming from. My cat honestly saved my life. I put him first and then my niece and nephew (they have their parents too) and then work my way up from there. My younger brother is the next priority for me. I like kids and generally try to ensure they're good. I obviously love my parents and other siblings but feel less protective, they're older than me. Then it's my very, very few close friends I care for. But VERY few. I've always been a very loving person, very empathetic (to a fault). I still believe leading with love with people in general is better than not doing that, but NGL a lot of people do honestly suck and I have no issues saying I love my cat more than I love most people. It's just how it is. People can be really evil and really selfish.

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

Yep. Animals have never bullied me or called me names or threatened to ruin my life over my opinions or feelings.

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

Nooo

by Icy_Impress_3341 4 weeks ago

I think it's fine to love animals as much as you're able,. I am concerned, however, that an animal is not your peer or your equal, and if you're unable to build similarly loving relationships with humans (creatures with equal autonomy and reasoning ability), it may not be totally healthy.

by Xharris 4 weeks ago

If I had to choose between my dogs life and mine I'd kill that little guy in a heart beat. If I had to choose between my life and my sons, I'd kill myself I a heartbeat. I love animals, but I think they are just great companions

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

Why not? As long as you don't turn into a crazy cat lady

by wunschkristophe 4 weeks ago

‘Animals offer unconditional love' and there is the problem. Can you really only form relationships with beings who are totally dependent on you? It's great to have the love of a pet. It's not fulfilling though. You need to be able to love a person for all their faults. After all you're presumably like someone to love you back like that.

by fabian45 4 weeks ago

I think it's weird to put an animal before people but hey, we're two different people.

by Narrow-Chip 4 weeks ago

Of course it's OK. Just don't be surprised when you're feeling empty at the lack of your social human connections eventually. animals offer unconditional love, non-judgmental companionship, and a sense of comfort that can be hard to find in human relationships. They don't hold grudges, they don't betray trust, and they offer a pure connection. You want the kind of relationship a child has with the world. 0 repercussions for any actions, and immediate validation and love with no equal reciprocation. If you want nothing deeper than infinite validation then yeah go for it. There's probably a reason your person to person relationships have brought you to a point where you prefer animals more than people.

by karlee73 4 weeks ago

Heck I do too!! People can break your heart, whereas an animal can't.

by Anonymous 4 weeks ago

Animals are innocent, and they don't really ever lose that. Doesn't matter if it's a goat slaying puma or a tiger killing people. It's in their nature and we accept that they are not to blame. I find animals fascinating, the weirdest of things happen with them. Like a that badger that made friends with the coyote. It's curious how animals in nature can foem bonds. But humans would sell their grandma down the river for 500million.

yeah cases like this exist, but the peak of animal love isn't hard to be met in actual humans. but i see how this is common in people who suffered family abuse or trauma and imo, most people who firmly believe this and live it are usually very out of touch with society and struggle with social interactions, which just isn't good at all as human. no one loves a human like a human.
