One might think a friend trustworthy, and the relationship good until the money isn't being paid back. It's hard to predict absolutely everything beforehand.

Exactly.

Better to give than to loan and frequently costs the same

Giving is a beautiful & Christian thing to do. Much better than lending, for sure. Lending, however, shouldn't be demonised.

Aye, it's important to be cautious. Always.

I agree. There's no reason for a responsible adult who won't misuse it to not use one though, even just from a buyer protection standpoint. They have refunded me when companies refused to or made it a difficult process a few times.

I paid a friend's deposit to flat with me when I was 18, I shouldn't have, it wasn't that she was a bad friend for not paying me back, she was just really irresponsible with money, she never paid me back and it got to the point I had to pick between the money or the friendship and I chose the friendship This caused tension that should never have been between us, now as a rule I don't lend money unless I want to gift it, this works a lot better for me and it makes me consider what I can really part with because when you think you're getting it back it can be hard to limit because you're "getting it back"

Lending money to a friend is like a gift. Either you are gifting them with the money, or if they pay you back, it is a gift received.

Yep. I've always refused "repayment" in cash form, insisting that if they feel they absolutely need to make things even that they give me something they think I might like. One friend gave me a piece of their art I always liked, another gave me a junk car that we cut the roof off of and drove around that summer and had the most fun in - admittedly we spent more time fixing it than driving it, but it was a blast none the less. Way better than if I just got cash back which I would have probably spent "wisely".

Hypothetical example. You lend your friend some money and for whatever reason, they are slow in repaying it back. You remind your friend of the debt, they promise to repay it but it doesn't happen. Now you are no longer friends because they are shamed because they haven't repaid the debt as you have a sour taste in your mouth. Now, the same situation, you lend your friend the money, but you don't hold expectations of it getting repaid and your friend isn't put in that awkward position of having to come up with excuses why they haven't paid you because you aren't asking them where is it. And you are still friends Now if that friend pays you back, great! It is like getting money you weren't expecting in the first place.

The only time I am willing to lend to a friend or family is when I'm absolutely confident I can live without getting paid back.
